what's here: PLAY
Play
Parks are as much a part of the Verrado experience as the surrounding mountains. From sunrise to sunset, these spaces offer a welcome retreat. They are the ideal place for neighbors to gather for a late afternoon chat and for children to play just beyond their own front door.
Most Verrado homes are within two blocks of a park and each park has its own unique character. In fact, neighbors often identify themselves around the parks; telling people that they live in the Cottonwood Grove neighborhood or Poet’s Park neighborhood.
Poets Park
At the corner of Wycliff Drive and Verrado Way is a refuge from the normal activities of the day. It is a place to reflect with thoughts and expressions from some of our most celebrated writers, artists and thinkers. Imbedded within the walkways are bronze and granite plaques reflecting thoughtful quotes. These quotes were selected by the 2006-2007 Sixth Grade Class from Verrado Middle School so that students could have a lasting impact on the place they call home.
Turtles Landing
In the middle of a neighborhood on White Rock Road, sit three stately tortoises ready to cool young visitors to this park. The three tortoises are part of the water play area within the park that is activated by the kids when needed. Their partner in the boulder area is a caring Gecko hovering over three large eggs in the soft fall surface. Adjacent to these large critters are a large turf area for playing catch and a picnic ramada for family or neighborhood get-togethers.
Tempo Park
At the intersection of Delaney and Riley Roads is a kinetic sculpture called Star Dancer, designed by an Arizona artist from Sedona. The all-metal structure moves in the slightest of breezes and rotates on a single axis as if to invite us along for a ride on the wind. At the other end of the park is a sundial that requires the human body to act as the standard. The shadow cast on the concrete time stamps indicates the time of day based on the time of year and position of the body. This park is all about the exploration of the human being in relationship to the elements around him.
Larger community parks, like Founders Park and Walton Park, provide a venue for Verrado events. This is where you'll get together with neighbors to celebrate the Fourth of July, enjoy the annual Founder's Day event or catch a Little League game.
Located just outside of Verrado, you'll find the spectacular White Tank Mountain Regional Park. The 30,000-acre park, Maricopa County's largest, has more than 20 miles of shared-use trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking or sunset trail rides. And if you prefer hitting the links or working out at the gym, Verrado provides an environment that best suits your needs.
