In the Italian language, the word ‘tempo’ literally translates to ‘time.’ Tempo Urban Bistro founders and proprietors Steven and Karen Maynard recently took time to reflect on the changes that their hyperlocal urban bistro has undergone since their October 2013 debut.

“We feel our personal growth over the past three years has been fueled by our caliber of menu offerings, continually reflected in our customers’ appreciation,” Chef Steven Maynard said. “My wife Karen and I are so proud of our staff, and their obvious enjoyment in the preparation and execution of the creations on our menu. We’ve added a variety of grass-fed burgers as a delicious and healthy lunch option. But the biggest culinary leap has evolved from our dinner menu, enticing our patrons to try new flavor combinations.”

A peek at Tempo Urban Bistro’s recently introduced Fall menu reveals Pumpkin Risotto, which arrives with panache in a cooked pumpkin. The fresh flavor of pumpkin is baked into every delicious bite of mascarpone risotto.

Another exciting new entree is Dr. Pepper Braised Pork and Beans. Tempo’s new take on this traditional dish is hearty, rich and mouthwatering.

Back by popular demand, delicious Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf is inspired by Chef Steven’s original family recipe. Select cuts of fresh meat are wrapped in bacon and served with house-made whipped mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables.

Starters and small plates feature seasonal fare, locally sourced from Blue Sky Farms, while newly introduced Sides for Sharing are delicious alone, as appetizers, or as a complement to any entrée or starter.

Karen Maynard beams when recalling the high notes of the past three years, such as Chef Steven Maynard’s nomination for two years in a row as “Best Chef” in Phoenix New Times’ Reader’s Choice Awards. Other achievements included the 2015 addition of garage doors to open up the space, and a 24-seat al fresco patio, adding ambience to the dining experience overlooking Main Street.

“As residents of Verrado for over ten years, Steven and I have been honored to support many worthy causes in this tight-knit, caring community we call home. Water is Life was a memorable evening of food from around the globe, while an Evening of Cookery and Wine supported Feed My Starving Children. We have proudly sponsored the Breast Cancer 5K, along with many other local organizations,” Karen said.

What’s on the horizon for this talented couple? “Karen and I are always looking for the next iteration of our evolving restaurant, whether it be our culinary fare, a fresh interior update, or inspiration for our popular summer Wine Dinner Series,” Chef Steven said. “We want Tempo Urban Bistro to continue to be that beat on Main Street for friends, food, music, craft cocktails and fun!”

When it comes to more intimate gatherings, Tempo Urban Bistro offers a catering menu for weddings, baby showers and birthday celebrations. “We are so grateful to this community for allowing us to help celebrate their milestones in life,” Chef Steven said. “We can’t wait to see what the next three years bring!”
